In our last post we stated there’s nothing more annoying than a leaky tap. Well if there’s one thing more annoying, it’s a blocked toilet! If you have guests it can be embarassing, and if the issue isn’t resolve it can overflow and cause all types of mess!

Before calling a plumber to the rescue, there are a few things you can try to help unblock the toilet.

Firstly, try using a plunger or your toilet brush to push the blockage through. Sometimes this can dislodge the blockage and clear everything out. Below are some other methods you can try too.

Please note, these techniques CAN work but sometimes it will be an issue that no amount of DIY will fix. We have had occasions where a toilet blockage was caused by tree roots coming up into the pipe.

So if you can’t fix it yourself, or would rather not play around in this area, we definitely recommend contacting a plumber.

Clogged toilet no plunger?

If you have a clogged toilet but no plunger, you can try the other techniques. I personally like to try the coat hanger method first. So if there’s a big blockage of toilet paper, the metal wire will twist through and should be able to push out the interference.

I’ve also used the baking soda and vinegar method a number of times with great success. Boil some water in the kettle and organise the cup of baking soda and white vinegar. Pour the baking soda into the toilet bowl first, and shortly after, follow with the white vinegar. This will go all bubbly and fizzy (which is kind of exciting to watch!).

After a few minutes, pour the hot water from the kettle (make sure it’s cooled slightly and not totally boiling) into the toilet. This essentially flushes the toilet and pushes any blockages through. After a few more minutes, you might want to try flushing it as well.

We have seen the baking soda and vinegar method work well, but have seen others try it over and over to no avail. One such customer actually had tree roots growing up through the pipes which was causing the toilet blockage. And in that situation, none of the above techniques are going to help!

So if you’re unsure of the problem, and just want it fixed fast, it’s always best to call a reputable plumber. Our emergency plumbers are available around the clock so call us on 0418 532 134.
